From the Unspoiled Beauty of the Valle de Lecrin to Granada’s Flamenco Heart
This week long photography holiday begins in the tranquil Valle de Lecrín, nestled in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. The Moors called it the “Valley of Happiness” – a fertile basin fed by mountain waters, where they once carved irrigation channels to nourish the orange, almond, and olive groves that still thrive today. Scattered with whitewashed villages and framed by the vast mountains of the Sierra Nevada, the valley remains untouched by mass tourism, offering an atmosphere of peace and stillness.
Your base here is a boutique hotel set within its own vineyard – a place of immense charm, with expansive views across the countryside. From here, you’ll explore gorges, lakes, and ancient footpaths, capturing the valley’s shifting light and timeless character. Whether photographing an early morning landscape from a Moorish watchtower or lake vistas at sunset, this is a place to slow down, look deeply, and reconnect with the rhythm of the land.
From Coastal Paths to Hilltop Villages
We venture beyond the valley to the unspoiled shores of the Costa Tropical and the marine national park of Cerro Gordo – a pristine stretch of coastline free from high-rises and tourist crowds. This protected landscape offers dramatic headlands, sea cliffs, and Mediterranean flora unique to the region. Our photo walk begins at a quiet beach and follows a coastal path to a Moorish watchtower, with sweeping views across the sea. We return via a second secluded beach, stopping to photograph rare plants, rugged rock formations, and the changing quality of light. There’s time to relax and enjoy lunch at a local beachside restaurant before heading back to the valley.
Later in the week, we take an evening road trip to Montefrío to capture the blue hour at one of Spain’s most iconic photography spots – named by National Geographic as one of the world’s top ten views. The 16th-century Church of the Incarnation, perched high above the village, forms a striking silhouette against a backdrop of endless olive groves. Afterward, we wander Montefrío’s narrow streets and enjoy a relaxed dinner in a traditional local restaurant – don’t miss the region’s award-winning cheese.
We also explore the Los Cahorros Gorge near Monachil — a thrilling but accessible walk known for its dramatic suspension bridges that span the Dílar River. Towering limestone cliffs, moss-covered rocks, and pockets of lush greenery make this a playground for photographers. Though the setting feels wild and adventurous, the walk itself is manageable – even in summer it’s a favourite among local families.
Granada: From Moorish Majesty to Flamenco Fire
After five full days in the Valley of Happiness, we say farewell to our vineyard retreat and head to Granada for the final three nights. Our base is a beautiful boutique hotel in the historic quarter, just a short walk from the Cathedral and university botanic gardens – a peaceful yet perfectly located spot to explore the city on foot.
On your first evening, we wind through the labyrinthine lanes of the Albaicín to photograph the iconic view of the Alhambra at sunset – a golden fortress set against the snow-dusted Sierra Nevada. The next morning begins in the Realejo, Granada’s old Jewish quarter, where bold graffiti and lively street scenes unfold across tiled walls and shady squares.
That evening, we head into the Sacromonte hills for a flamenco performance in a traditional cave venue, where the music still echoes with the raw emotion of its Romany roots. The final day is a visual and sensory treat – a morning in the Alhambra’s gardens, at their most fragrant and colourful in late spring. Ornamental fountains, roses, jasmine, and Moorish architecture offer endless inspiration.
There’s also time to unwind at Granada’s ancient Arab Baths before a one-to-one session with Chris to review your weeks’s photography. We finish with a relaxed group dinner in a garden restaurant overlooking the Alhambra – a fitting finale to a journey through light, culture, and creativity.
